Islay Book Festival 2010

Friday 3rd September

An exciting day for the Primary Schools

 

This year our authors will be visiting all the Islay Primary Schools. The children from Small Isles School, Jura will join the events at Keills Primary School.

At both Bowmore and Port Ellen Primary Schools the visiting author will be Julia Donaldson. This event will be for the full Primary School age range.

At Keills and Port Charlotte Primary Schools, the authors will be Tony Bonning for the younger pupils and Catherine MacPhail for the older pupils.

Saturday 4th September

DOORS OPEN AT 10.00AM AND ADMISSION TO CHILDREN’S SESSIONS IS FREE


Children’s Programme

10.30am JULIA DONALDSON – The Gruffalo and Other Stories     For For P1 – P4, and 4-year olds with parents. Parents of older children are also welcome.

Come along for an hour of family fun with the author of Britain’s best-loved bedtime story. Meet Julia, and her husband Malcolm, who will be acting out some of Julia’s stories and singing some of her songs – with quite a lot of help from you.

This features a different selection of stories from those heard in school on Friday – so come along for another treat.

12.00 noon LARI DON – FIRST AID FOR FAIRIES AND OTHER FABLED BEASTS   For 8-12 year olds

Lari Don’s first novel won the 2009 Royal Mail Award. It is a quest set in mainland Scotland and Orkney, involving night-time escapes, riddles and a herd of smelly baddies.

Lari will discuss where ideas come from and how to turn them into stories, as well as sharing stories about her favourite fabled beasts and possibly even some riddles.

Lari’s events are always full of passion, enthusiasm, and lots of joining in!

2.00pm LARI DON – WOLF NOTES   For 8-12 year olds

This magical adventure is a sequel to First Aid for Fairies and Other Fabled Beasts.

It is set in the Highlands and in several Scottish islands. There are dragon flights, sword fights, scary fairies and life-saving jam sandwiches.

Lari will read from the book, talk about how she wrote it, tell a wolf story or two, and encourage everyone to imagine their own adventures.

3.30pm TONY BONNING alias AIKEN DRUM   For 5 – 7 year olds

A fantastic fun-filled time is guaranteed with this top children’s performer and author. Tony came to our second Book Festival in 2007.His session was such fun that we’ve asked him back for more. So come along for an hour of madness. It’s crazy, it’s wild, it’s interactive– and the children will talk about it for weeks after!

 Make sure you don’t miss it.

Sunday 5th September

11.30am LARI DON – FUN FOR THE WEE ONESMainly for toddlers and pre-school but please bring a grown-up – mum, dad, grandpa, granny, carer, babysitter – anyone who is happy to join in with some silly stories.

Lari, an award-winning author and professional storyteller will share her favourite hands-on, noisy, joiny-in stories.

There will also be an informal discussion about how to get the best out of storytelling at home.

1.30pm CATHERINE MACPHAIL -GHOST STORIES   For 8-12 year olds

Catherine has written lots of stories with a ghostly content. These include Another Me, Dark Waters and Missing . She has even written some humorous ones like Get That Ghost To Go.

Catherine will read from some of her stories. She will also tell you where she finds ideas for Ghost Stories, and how she writes them down. So come along and be inspired by how Catherine MacPhail does it.

3.00pm CATHERINE MACPHAIL – A GHOSTLY WORKSHOP   For 8-12 year olds

Now what about writing a ghost story for yourself? Catherine MacPhail will take you through the steps needed to create your very own ghostly mystery. The scarier the better!
